Games… Then and Now

Did you enjoy your childhood? What games did you play? Looking at the children now, I don’t think we played the same games. They have different interests now, more on computers, yes computer games. I wonder if they ever played with a yoyojam. They are missing a lot if they don’t play this kinds of games. This is what we played when we were younger and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sometimes I am saddened that kids do not know the kind of games we used to play, how I wish I can introduce it to them. But as it is they seem to enjoy their kind of game, so I let them be.

I’m back! Hopefully I’ll be back to work too. I want a fresh start and to start off I want one of these custom desk name plates. Nothing fancy though but I love it. It’s about time I put desk plates in the office so people would know where to go. Isn’t it a nice idea? Our office is just small but this doesn’t mean that we can be limited to certain things, right? So yes, I want desk plate!

Seattle’s Best/s

Thanks to my longtime college friend Rhona for sponsoring my Seattle spree from the – round trip plane ticket from San Francisco to Seattle, accommodation, good food, souvenir items and the tour. Succeeding posts will feature Seattle’s bests!

The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. Located at the Seattle Center, it was built for the 1962 World’s Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high at its highest point and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. When it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour (89 m/s) and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude, which would protect the structure against an earthquake as powerful as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage.

The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet (160 m), and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet (150 m). From the top of the Needle, one can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands. Photographs of the Seattle skyline often show the Space Needle in a prominent position, even appearing to tower above the rest of the city’s skyscrapers, as well as Mount Rainier in the background. This occurs because the tower, which is equivalent in height to a 60-story building, stands more than a kilometer northwest of most downtown skyscrapers.

Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle via elevators that travel at 10 miles per hour (4.5 m/s). The trip takes 43 seconds, and some tourists wait in hour-long lines in order to ascend to the top of the tower. On windy days, the elevators are slowed down to a speed of 5 miles per hour (2.2 m/s). The Space Needle was designated a historic landmark on April 19, 1999 by the City’s Landmarks Preservation Board.

It’s Freezing Cold

It’s freezing cold and I am not really prepared for this. I don’t know if I will ever be. At first I got excited to the idea because I can dress up pretty much. I just can’t do winter dressing in the country where I came from, tropics. It’s a good thing my friend has something like these columbia jackets, it has kept me warm during this cold months. I’m glad I was able to experience winter, but I don’t know if I am solved to the idea of having it once a year, but then again everything is a matter of adjusting.

San Francisco Muni

Muni Metro is a light rail system serving San Francisco, California, operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), a division of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Serving a daily average of 151,300, Muni Metro is the third busiest light rail system in the United States.

Muni Metro is the modern incarnation of the traditional streetcar system that had served San Francisco since the late 19th century. While many streetcar lines in other cities and San Francisco itself were converted to buses after World War II, five lines survived until the 1970s, when the streetcar lines were converted to light rail during the opening of the Market Street Subway in 1980. Recently, the system had undergone expansion, most notably the Third Street Light Rail Project, completed in 2007, which started the first new rail line in San Francisco in over half a century. Other projects, such as the Central Subway, are underway.

A trolley pole is a tapered cylindrical pole of wood or metal, used to transfer electricity from a “live” overhead wire to the control and propulsion equipment of a tram or trolley bus. The use of overhead wire in a system of current collection is reputed to be the 1880 invention of Frank J. Sprague.

The system consists of 71.5 miles (115.1 km) of standard gauge track, seven light rail lines (six regular lines and one peak-hour line), three tunnels, nine subway stations, twenty-four surface stations, and eighty-seven surface stops. Muni Metro utilizes a fleet of 151 light rail vehicles (LRV) made by Breda.
